CHAPTER 14

She’d forgotten his name.

He lay with Olivia wound tight around his body enjoying how her lithe curves snuggled against his side. There was something intrinsically sweet and alluring about her.

When she wasn’t covered in blood.

Or forgetting his name.

He was likely playing the fool. Everything pointed to her. The blood. Her upset over him being in the upstairs rooms. Her trashing the room next to his. The knife.

Yeah, she was up to her eyeballs in whatever was going on.

And somehow, he was going to get her out of whatever she was into.

He rose from the bed to get a washcloth from the bathroom so they could clean up. The last thing she needed was to walk in there and see the mess. The blood.

He entered the bathroom and the hair at his nape rose. A shiver ran over his skin.

The entire bathroom was pristine. The white tiled floor, the tub—they sparkled. Not a spot of crimson touched anything. Where the hell did the shredded, bloody dress go? Even his boxers had disappeared.

He pulled the door away from the wall to see if their clothing had been pushed back there. There was no gown on the floor.

But a fresh-pressed white dress hung from the back of the door. Identical to the one she wore yesterday.

And the day before.

He turned a slow circle, glancing over every clean surface one last time.

Jesus Christ on Sunday, maybe Olivia didn’t have memory problems. Maybe it was him.

Had he imagined the whole thing? He hadn’t taken any morphine, but maybe the shit had fucked up his brain permanently.

For a long time, he stared at the back of the door for no other reason than he feared opening it. He was scared shitless that he’d open the door and Olivia wouldn’t be in his bed. Or in his room.

Or anywhere.

“Luke?”

Slowly, he eased the door open.

Olivia smiled from the mussed sheets. “Is everything okay?”

No, everything was not okay. Not at all. He was imagining things. Hallucinating.

Hunter dropped his gaze to the floor at the base of the bed. GET OUT.

He re-entered the room, afraid . . . . Of what? Afraid that any sudden moves might burst his happy little fantasy and reveal whatever monsters were pulling the strings behind the scenes? He rejoined her in bed.

He must have looked as half-mad as he felt. Her brows drew together and she framed his face in her hands. “What’s wrong? Are you angry at me?”

“No.” He paused, searching for how to explain. She didn’t remember. She wouldn’t believe him if he told her everything. “Livy.” His mouth dry, he wet his lips. Lowered his voice to a whisper. “Something strange is going on in this house. I’m not sure what, but I want you to leave and come stay with me. I don’t think it’s safe here.”

She glanced around, her voice whisper soft. “What do you mean?”

“I think we should leave today.” He drew the pads of his fingers down her cheek. “I want you to come with me to Seattle.
